How does this work?
Your browser records a few seconds of audio. The app finds your voice’s pitch 100 times a second (YIN pitch tracking), splits it into syllables and compares the shape of each one with the target tone. This all happens on your device and nothing is saved.
In lessons, where your browser supports it (it does), its built-in Chinese speech recognition also checks the words you said. Chrome sends that audio to Google and Safari to Apple.
Pitch varies a lot between voices, so the app learns your typical pitch as you practise.
Tips: use a quiet room, hold the phone about 20 cm away, and speak at a normal volume.
