Android release 倒计时dào jì shí

Closed test ends: we apply for public Android release

· Hawaii time

Counting down to Thursday, November 5, 2026, Hawaii time.

Google Play closed testday – of 14

Countdown to the day we can apply to Google for the public Android release. Google then reviews the app, and Google decides how long that takes. This is not a launch date.

Inside the app

Learn, write, speak, compete and collect

Everything is one tap away on the bar at the bottom of your screen: Learn, Write, Tones, Ranks, your profile and the duck shop. New on Learn: a Today row with your next steps, and a one-minute survey that asks what you would like next.

  1. Learn

A journey map, with 复习fùxí Review on top

Lessons sit on a painted trail across China. The Review card at the top shows how many words are due and starts a quick review in one tap, so old words come back right before you forget them.
The Learn screen: the Review card with words due, above Stop 1, the Forbidden City
  2. Write · new

Write 写xiě: draw every HSK 1 character

All 179 HSK 1 characters, one at a time, in four steps:

    • Details: meaning, radical and parts
    • Watch the strokes animate
    • Trace it twice
    • Write it on your own

New: red beans for Write. Each character you write on your own earns 1 to 3 beans once, by its stars, plus 10 for every 10 characters, up to 30 a day.

Writing practice for nǐ (you): the character on a practice grid with its radical in red, pinyin and meaning
  3. Tones

See your tones as you say them

Tap the mic and say it out loud: your pitch is drawn over the target tone, so you can see how close you are. Practise the four tones, then tone pairs. The analysis runs on your own device.
The Tones screen: mā, má, mǎ and mà with a listen button
  4. Ranks

    Climb the leaderboards

Weekly and all-time boards for red beans and course XP, plus boards for the HSK 1 and HSK 2 practice exams. Your duck stands next to your name.
  5. Shop

The 鸭子商店yāzi shāngdiàn duck shop: 48 new items

Spend the red beans you earn by studying. New: vehicles to park beside your duck, scenic backgrounds and animated profile frames.

    • 7 vehicles
    • 11 backgrounds
    • 11 frames
    • hats, outfits & effects
The duck shop's Vehicles tab: an e-bike, a kick scooter, a rickshaw trike and a motorcycle, each priced in red beans
  6. Supporters & gifts

Supporter perks, and gifts for a friend

Gold and Diamond Supporter plans (monthly; yearly coming soon) include all of Level 1 and add the full HSK 2 course while subscribed, Supporter bonus lessons and a bonus mock exam, more red beans a day and a supporter badge and profile frame. Coming soon to iOS and Android

Not in the stores yet: Android is in a closed test on Google Play, with no public release date from Google yet. Until then it works in the browser on any phone or computer.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Is it really free?
Units 1–6 of Level 1 (45 lessons, ending on a review check), the 41 culture and tones bonus lessons, Write and Tones practice are free, with no ads and no credit card. The rest of Level 1 (49 lessons, the 15 theme lessons along the way, the Level 1 exam and certificate) is the Level 1 pack, a one-time $14.99 on the website. HSK 2 is an optional one-time unlock of $14.99. Gold, Diamond and Founder include both. Learners who were already past Unit 6 when the pack started keep all of Level 1 free.
I’ve never studied Chinese. Is this for me?
Absolutely. Lesson 1 starts from hello. You never need to read characters on your own: every character in the app has its pinyin (the spelling of its sound) right above it.
Can I learn to write characters?
Yes. In Write (写xiě) you practise every HSK 1 character: read its details, watch the strokes animate, trace it twice, then write it on your own. Draw with your finger, a pen or the mouse. Signed in, each character you write on your own earns 1 to 3 red beans once (by its stars), plus 10 for every 10 characters, up to 30 Write beans a day.
Do I have to type tone marks?
No. When you type pinyin you can leave the tones out: “nihao” is fine. You still hear and practice the tones in listening and speaking.
How does speaking practice work?
Tap the mic and say the word. The app draws your pitch over the target tone so you can see how close you are. The analysis runs on your own device.
Is there an iPhone or Android app?
The Android app is in a closed test on Google Play right now: join the Android beta. When the 14-day closed test ends we apply to Google for the public release; Google then reviews the app, so there is no public release date yet (see the countdown above). The iOS app is coming soon. Until then, Learn Chinese with Laura works in the browser on any phone, tablet or computer, and your progress follows your account.
What is HSK?
HSK is the official Chinese proficiency test. Its new HSK 3.0 syllabus starts with Level 1 (300 words): our Level 1 course is aligned to it, then HSK 2 follows. Everyday words, simple sentences and real conversations, step by step, with practice exams for both. Our exams are practice tests, not official HSK results.
Can I give it as a gift?
Yes, on the website: give HSK 2, or a month of Gold or Diamond Supporter, to another learner by username, or as a link and code to share. Send a gift.
How do I pay for HSK 2?
One payment of $14.99 with PayPal, yours for good: no subscription. The first HSK 2 lesson is free to try. Supporters (from $9 a month) also get HSK 2 while subscribed. See the terms & refunds.
